An aquarium attraction within the largest shopping mall in the Middle East reopened after it sprang a leak, dousing visitors and forcing a partial evacuation.
But owners of the Dubai Mall have kept the walkthrough tunnel where the leak occurred closed for the time being. This means that visitors can not stroll through the huge 10m-litre tank watching fish including tiger sharks circulating overhead.
None of the 33,000 sea creatures advertised as living inside the tank got out, according to a report on Gulfnews.com. But the lower-ground and ground floor areas were cordoned off and cleaners were seen mopping the floor. Most shops in the vicinity were also shuttered.
A video on the news Web site shows people walking through ankle-deep water.
"I heard a loud ‘doush’ noise and suddenly a lot of water was flowing all over the ground," said a German woman eyewitness. "I was scared that it might crack so I moved to the first floor. The security people were trying to move the crowd away. One woman was really scared, but others acted like nothing was happening."
A Dubai Mall spokesperson said the accident as not a “breach” but a “minor crack”. It also did not impact the aquarium environment or the safety of the aquatic animals.
A video taken during the evacuation shows people walking through ankle-deep water. The mall has around 1,200 retail outlets and is across from the recently opened Burj Khalifa, the tallest tower in the world.
