Growth in the manned security marked has slowed to just 1 per cent this year, reflecting the economic downturn and closure of banks and shops in the UK. The UK market is worth £3.3bn, but is being squeezed as it continues to be highly competitive and margins squeezed as a result, according to the latest MBD UK Manned Security Development report.

Profitability and productivity have dropped in the FM sector over the past year, but optimism and staff morale have risen - albeit by the smallest of margins. The latest Barometer Report into the Facilities Management Sector, produced by Asset Skills, reveals that profitability and productivity fell by 0.2 per cent and 1.6 per cent respectively

The chancellor George Osborne wants to cut staff at the Treasury and squeeze workers into smaller desks to save money and pack in more people. The chancellor will reconvene the public spending “star chamber” this week and hopes to settle a number of departmental budgets – including justice, transport, environment and culture – by mid-September.
